The Charles River, sometimes called the River Charles or simply the Charles, is an 80-mile-long (129 km) river in eastern Massachusetts. It flows northeast from Hopkinton to Boston along a meandering route which doubles back on itself several times and travels through 23 cities and towns before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.

There were a series of lakes that had been created after the Charles River was dammed about 100 years earlier. They became lovers' haunts because basically it created all these little nooks and crannies in the water where you could pop in a canoe and you suddenly didn't have a chaperone and you weren't around the grownups anymore.
