I found an article in The Spectator from 1885 about a dog in Lake Ontario who had pulled a boy out of Lake Ontario, and they'd taken him and they said he went to a confectioner's and given him a variety of cakes and other sweets. I'm not sure if dogs are allowed to eat cakes and other sweets, but they did anyway.
