On the show

Merlin in the original myth is alleged to have been buried at a crossover between two rivers: the River Tweed and a little stream called Powsail Burn. In the legends it was written that if ever the Powsail Burn and the Tweed were to meet at the place of Merlin's final resting place, then England and Scotland would have the same monarch, and this prediction is in medieval text. On the exact day that James the Sixth of Scotland and James the First of England was crowned in 1603, the banks of the River Tweed broke and it flooded into the Powsail Burn and they met.
