About Sahara Desert

The Sahara is a desert spanning North Africa. With an area of 9,200,000 square kilometres (3,600,000 sq mi), it is the largest hot desert in the world and the third-largest desert overall, smaller only than the deserts of Antarctica and the northern Arctic.

A lot of the sand in the Caribbean is blown over from the Sahara. There was a major coral disease in 1999 which killed off loads of Caribbean coral — it was a fungus called Aspergillus Siddawi and it happened to coincide with all these dust storms in the Sahara. This fungus lived in the Sahara Desert, been picked up, blown all the way over to the Caribbean, killed a bunch of coral.

Other times Sahara Desert came up

  1. It's basically like an art attack when you're doing the big one and you wouldn't know what it was, and then they pan out at the ends and you see it, and that's what basically this is like. That was great. Yeah. I just bloody love that. Mauritania is an interesting country. It's 90% Sahara Desert. It's only got 3.5 million people, and yet they have found the time to have 11 coups, or attempted coups, since 1960. 11 coups? That's a lot. Yeah. It's a good solid number.

  2. Yes, it was in black and white at some point. Then Earth was black and white. Then one very flamboyant cave bun came. Basically a few years back, they crushed a 1.1 billion. year old rock that they found beneath the Sahara Desert and that produced pink and that's the oldest colour that we now know of. I see. Cool. Weirdly, the oldest colour but also get ready to be upset.

  3. Senegal and Bamako in Mali as well yeah and the economist spoke to an expert who reckons that by weight pasta is the main product by weight that smuggled across the Sahara. Wow, just because you can make a profit on the other side. Yeah, exactly. You might as well, right? Still, driving a truck full of pasta by yourself across the Sahara Desert, it must be a cannolini life. Mixed. A mixed reaction. Did you say how they weigh marks on the way back?

  4. Okay. It is time for our final fact of the show. That is Chazinsky. My fact this week is that people who smuggled drugs one way across the Sahara Desert often smuggled pasta the other way. This is pasta smuggling. It's a big deal. I read this in The Economist, and so they did a little investigation, and it turns out that if you're trafficking drugs, you have these big trucks that take them to where you need to drop off the drugs, and then you've got empty trucks, so you might as well fill them with something.
