A lot of the sand in the Caribbean is blown over from the Sahara. There was a major coral disease in 1999 which killed off loads of Caribbean coral — it was a fungus called Aspergillus Siddawi and it happened to coincide with all these dust storms in the Sahara. This fungus lived in the Sahara Desert, been picked up, blown all the way over to the Caribbean, killed a bunch of coral.

Okay. It is time for our final fact of the show. That is Chazinsky. My fact this week is that people who smuggled drugs one way across the Sahara Desert often smuggled pasta the other way. This is pasta smuggling. It's a big deal. I read this in The Economist, and so they did a little investigation, and it turns out that if you're trafficking drugs, you have these big trucks that take them to where you need to drop off the drugs, and then you've got empty trucks, so you might as well fill them with something.
